Dr. Bittner specializes in low vision rehabilitation and has a PhD in clinical investigation from Johns Hopkins. She is currently an Associate Professor at the UCLA Stein Eye Institute, where she is the Smotrich Family Optometric Clinician-Scientist Chair and Chief of Optometric Services. Dr. Bittner previously held faculty positions at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute in Baltimore and Nova Southeastern University, College of Optometry in Fort Lauderdale. She has active and previous funding from NIH and the National Eye Institute to lead the conduct of clinical studies of low vision, and has served as coinvestigator or consultant for multicenter clinical trials for inherited retinal degenerations. Dr. Bittner is a Fellow and Research Diplomate of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) in the Low Vision section. She was a proud recipient of the AAO Ezell Fellowship Award in 2010, the AAO Borish Award in 2017, and the AAO Clinical Research Award in 2019.
